Fun Run Start and Finish Line along Lake Drive

The Physical Education (PE) department of the University of the Cordilleras-College of Teacher Education (UC-CTE) successfully held its inaugural Fun Run and Hataw Na! Zumba events, themed “Optimizing Individual Health and Fitness through Active Lifestyle,” on November 25, 2023 in Baguio City. This event served as the culminating activity for the Physical Activity Towards Health and Fitness courses.

The Fun Run, a 5-kilometer race, commenced and concluded at Lake Drive, with a turning point at 50’s Diner in Military Cutoff. The top five male and female first finishers were given Fun Run shirts. Additionally, the top three male and female finishers were awarded plaques of recognition, while the fourth and fifth place male and female finishers received medals.

Following the Fun Run, PATHFIT 2 students participated in the Hataw Na! Zumba dance session at the Melvin Jones Grandstand. Under the guidance of their instructors, students from both trimestral and semestral schedules brought vibrant energy to the venue.

In the spirited Zumba competition, one section from Mr. Leo Patrick Niñalga’s class clinched first place, followed by a section from Ms. Hannah Colas’s class in second place, and a section from Ms. Kathleen Bangtowan’s class in third. Adding to the excitement, Hataw na King and Queen were Jesuron Burnot from the College of Nursing and Diana Rose Orotea from the College of Teacher Education, respectively. They received medals and shirts as recognition for their participation.

The Zumba dance activity was led by a dance company spearheaded by Ms. Suzette Gerali Galvin. The spectators and judges were Mr. Tsude De Vera from the Senior High School Department of the university, Dr. Proserfina R. Retuta-Ruiz from the Medical Clinic, and Dr. Danilo L. Cong-o, the director of the Sports Development Office.

This activity was organized in partnership with the Baguio City Council, the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO), and the UC Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Team. In addition to student participants, community members and senior citizens also took part in these activities.

The Fun Run and Hataw Na! Zumba events aimed to encourage a healthier, more active lifestyle among students, reinforcing the importance of physical fitness and collective enthusiasm for health-conscious activities. These initiatives also align with the Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education of promoting lifelong learning opportunities, highlighting how engaging in regular physical activities contributes to ongoing personal growth and education.
