Session Road Rejuvination Plan

The University of the Cordilleras (UC) Department of Architecture Graduate School, in collaboration with the local government of Baguio, presented an innovative proposal aimed at revitalizing one of the city’s busiest streets. Entitled “Enhancing Urban Aesthetics: Decluttering Session Road, Baguio City,” the project was unveiled during the executive-legislative meeting at Baguio City Hall on September 18, 2023. Spearheaded by architects Jerico Jordan Bernardo, Aiza Fernandez, Camille Reyes, and Gerard Espiritu, the initiative aims to address congestion and improve the visual appeal of Session Road—a key commercial and cultural hub in the city.

The proposal outlines strategies to reduce visual and physical clutter along Session Road by introducing unified signage, organized sidewalk spaces, and dedicated zones for pedestrians and vendors. By tackling these urban design challenges, the project seeks to enhance walkability, promote local commerce, and create a more cohesive streetscape that reflects Baguio’s unique character. The city’s government has expressed support, recognizing the potential of this project to uplift the city’s aesthetics while preserving its cultural identity. If implemented, the initiative could serve as a model for other urban areas seeking sustainable and aesthetically pleasing city planning solutions.

Greening Baguio: Criminology Interns Participate in Tree Planting Initiative

On May 27, 2023, Criminology interns from the University of the Cordilleras, alongside representatives from the University of the Philippines, gathered at the BABRC Compound in Dontogan, Baguio City, to partake in a tree planting activity spearheaded by the Regional Mobile Force Battalion Team Project Kalinga.

The day commenced with an informative briefing that underscored the significance of tree planting, alongside practical guidance on nurturing pine tree seedlings. Participants gained insights into the ecological advantages of trees, such as carbon absorption and habitat creation, which are vital for preserving biodiversity and combating climate change. Following the briefing, interns engaged in necessary site preparation that included weeding to ensure optimal conditions for the seedlings. This practical experience not only enhanced teamwork but also cultivated a shared sense of accountability toward environmental stewardship. After prepping the site, the interns and university representatives planted the pine seedlings, directly contributing to the greening of our community.

This tree planting initiative serves as a tangible step in moderating urban heat and managing stormwater, thereby reinforcing city resilience against climate-related challenges. The collaboration among the Regional Mobile Force Battalion, Criminology interns, and University of the Philippines representatives embodies the essence of Goal 17, highlighting the importance of partnerships for impactful community engagement and effective sustainable practices.
