The University of the Cordilleras, whose educational philosophy is based on the notion that education should be a birthright which means equal access for all, is committed to lifelong learning that supports the holistic achievement of its aspiration of enabling quality education (SDG #4). UC will not only involve those in attendance on the premises in its operation, but also other members of communities that will facilitate the embedding of public resources, events, vocational training, and outreach activities. This model not only contributes to personal development but also to the strengthening of community with shared learning as a value for all.
The Importance of Public Resources
Public resources—libraries, community centres, local businesses, and non-profits—offer vital nodes in this lifelong‐learning ecosystem. They offer not just physical environments but also access to information and tools central to growth, personally and professionally. By enhancing these resources with customised programmes, communities can create an inclusive environment, seeing learning as an ongoing process and not a sequence of events.
For instance, libraries turn from being places to read quietly to increasingly lively environments of learning, often holding workshops on digital literacy, entrepreneurial skills, and financial management. These workshops also help bridge the gap between what’s studied in the academic curriculum and the skills required in life on the ground, insisting learning doesn’t end at graduation — and will continue into 2024 and beyond.
